Giving up, how and why

The following are some of my random thoughts on following the whole food, plant based diet.

If you have had a medical fright, (mine was two  pulmonary embolisms, a revulsion towards the prescribed warfarin and a suspicion of most pharmaceutical drugs), it is reasonably easy to make the decision to eliminate the foods that kill us.  Having witnessed my improved health and vitality due to the change to a plant based diet, I would urge everyone to read the books and visit the web sites to share my conviction.

An early start is to empty your house of all offending foods, so you are no longer tempted, and of course resist the temptation to buy them in a moment of weakness.  The next is to build up the self confidence in your new diet so that you become comfortable telling others what you would like to eat.

There is no doubt that veganism generates substantial criticisms from carnists, often to the point of anger.  They will, in detail, tell you the dire effects of eliminating animal proteins from your diet, including the irrational fear of loss of calcium and protein.  It is obviously easier to assert that you are under doctor’s orders, as this is an 'acceptable reason'; trying to explain that your choice is purely for good health and longevity, backed by scientific proof, cuts little ice.

No matter how hard it is to resist animal fats and proteins, due to your own desires for the forbidden foods or due to peer pressure from others, the rewards will become manifest in as little as 2 weeks and the hard work will last no more than 3 months.   The benefits will last an expanded life time.
